| Episode 22 - | Sakuya's Secret |
| hanare kite / kokoroshiki / omoi hito | |
| [Coming to leave, the thoughts of a lonely person] | |
| First aired - | 26th August 1997 |
At the Tsuchida shrine, Tenchi is practising his priest duties when he and Mr. Tsuchida are interrupted by Sakuya, who takes their picture. She has decided to take up photography so as she can make a record of her summer vacation with Tenchi. As she snaps pictures, Yugi watches from afar, puzzled by Sakuya's behaviour.
Meanwhile, in Okayama, Ayeka is throwing a fit. Sasami has told her about her friend Yugi's sudden disappearance in the woods. Ayeka tells her little sister that the person that attacked the Masaki shrine (see episode 13) was also called Yugi. Sasami cannot believe that her gentle friend could possibly be the same person that attacked everyone else, so Ayeka takes her to Washu's lab to see the recording of Yugi's attack. Sasami is devastated to find out that her friend and the vicious demon that attacked the shrine are one and the same.
Back in Tokyo, Sakuya is busy taking photos of Tenchi. As they pause at a pavement café, Tenchi takes the opportunity to ask her about her family. He has noticed that she never mentions them. However, Sakuya quickly changes the subject, and drags Tenchi off to the park with her.
At the Masaki home, Ayeka has stepped up security in case Yugi should decide to try and visit Sasami again. Azaka and Kamidake patrol the perimeter, while Ayeka has set up an intricate series of booby traps inside the house. Sasami is still unconvinced that Yugi could be so vicious.
At the park, Tenchi and Sakuya get a picture together, arm in arm. Tenchi asks her about whether she was born in Tokyo, and if she lives here with her parents. Sakuya tells him she doesn't know, changes the subject again and rushes off to buy them ice-creams. As she leaves, Tenchi is unaware that his fragment of the crystal necklace begins to glow in its pouch.
In Okayama, Washu is carrying out an experiment on her fragment of the crystal, which is making the others glow in resonance. Outside, Nobuyuki is surprised to come home to find the house transformed into a virtual fortress, and even more surprised when he is chased away by Azaka and Kamidake, who are now painted with camouflage colours!
Meanwhile, Tenchi and Sakuya are talking. Tenchi asks her again about her family history, about any memorable family trips together. Sakuya becomes confused. She admits that she cannot remember anything about her home, her family or her history.
While all this is going on, Ryoko is on yet another raid on a distant planet. She and Hotsuma are about to make off with a valuable treasure from a primitive village, but one of the village kids tries to stop them. Ryoko is about to hit the kid when her crystal bracelet falls out from her sleeve, and she stops in her tracks. She looks at the bracelet and mutters the name "Tenchi" to herself. Meanwhile, Kiyone and Mihoshi are in pursuit of Ryoko. While Kiyone is berating her scatterbrained partner for playing with action figures when she should be working, she too glances at her crystal bracelet, and suggests that they should take their next holiday on Earth.
Back in Tokyo, Sakuya and Tenchi are looking at the results of the day's photography. Sakuya gives Tenchi the photograph of them both together and puts it in a frame on his desk. The subject of Tenchi being needed in Okayama comes up again, and despite Sakuya's protestations, Tenchi insists that he only wants to visit his home town again. He asks Sakuya if she misses her home town, but Sakuya says she can only remember Tokyo. She suddenly realises that she can only remember things that happened from the point she met Tenchi onwards. In a shocked state, she runs out of Tenchi's apartment.
In her palace, Yugi summons her three servants and prepares to make her final attack. All around Tokyo, bright columns of light and huge crystals burst out of the ground as her palace begins to break through into the real world.
Sakuya sits on the floor of her apartment, surrounded by the day's photographs. She is running over the day's revelations again and again in her mind, disturbed that she cannot remember a thing from before meeting Tenchi. She knows that she doesn't have a family or a history or a birthplace like Tenchi. Unable to make sense of it all, she falls sobbing to the floor.

The young kid that Ryoko threatens resembles the character Photon from the anime series Photon, a show made by AIC, the company that produces Tenchi Muyo! If the reference to this show follows, then the planet is called Sandy Planet. Thanks to ejo0623 for pointing out this reference. |
