Episode 17 -  Drifting Away
hôkôi / uchû no anata ni / Ryôko tatsu
hôkôi / uchû no anata ni / Ryôko tatsu
[Wandering - Ryoko leaves to wander space]
First aired - 22nd July 1997

YugiYugi's well-laid plans grow closer to completion as a woeful Ryoko, having witnessed Tenchi kissing Sakuya, drifts apart from the other girls. She wanders the streets of Tokyo in a whirl of melancholic self-pity, her heart leaden with sorrow. Suddenly, she is attacked out of nowhere by an unseen assailant, who fires wave after wave of glowing needles at her. She rushes through the streets, trying to shake off her stalker, avoiding the repeated needle blasts. As she dodges through an alleyway, she stumbles across a mysterious mansion. Having apparently shaken off her tail, she pauses for breath. Hearing a noise behind her, she turns and fires a bolt of energy, narrowly missing the figure that has appeared behind her; Hotsuma, who she first met in episode four. Hotsuma is about to explain what he is doing there when they are both attacked by Ryoko's earlier pursuer. Their attackers finally show themselves; a whole gang of Bioroid Enforcers, sent by the Galaxy Police. Hotsuma tells Ryoko that not only are they after her for her crimes, but after himself as well. As they prepare to take on the Bioroid Enforcers, Hotsuma tells her that he is interested if forming a partnership with Ryoko, taking on the Galaxy Police together. He demonstrates his power to Ryoko by vaporizing the Bioroid Enforcers.

Tenchi's motherMeanwhile, Tenchi and Sakuya are planning their summer vacation together. They decide to visit the beach one day. Tenchi remembers how he used to visit the beach with his mother when he was younger, and how happy it made him.

Elsewhere, a second wave of Bioroid Enforcers are fighting Ryoko and Hotsuma. As they battle, Hotsuma continues trying to tempt Ryoko back into space piracy. He tells her that she is wasted on Earth, and there is nothing to keep her on the planet. Ryoko begins to protest, saying that she has a special someone here, but she remembers Sakuya and Tenchi's kiss. As the rage builds inside her again, she destroys the Enforcers with her bare hands.

Back in Okayama, Ayeka is feeling depressed, the memory of Tenchi's angry outburst at her still fresh in her mind. She thinks that Tenchi no longer needs or wants her, and that if that truly is the case, she wouldn't know what to do. As she walks through the forest, she arrives at the holy tree, where Tsugaru stands waiting. He introduces himself as a sorcerer, and tells Ayeka he can help her understand her own heart. He shows her the image of Tenchi kissing Sakuya, and tells her that she has lost him to her. She doesn't believe Tsugaru, but he tells her to ask Tenchi himself if she wants to be sure.

Ayeka, hanging on the telephoneThe next morning, Ayeka decides to call Tenchi. Plagued with doubt, she delays over picking up the 'phone, but Sasami beats her to it and calls Tenchi herself for a chat. Sasami passes the 'phone to Ayeka and, hesitantly, she speaks to Tenchi. She asks him how he is getting along with his new friends in Tokyo, and specifically, Sakuya. Before Tenchi can answer, his doorbell rings. He rushes to get the door. Sakuya has arrived to walk to school with him, and he rings off, telling Ayeka he will call her later.

Together, Hotsuma and Ryoko are leaving the Earth. As the planet she has called home for the last two years recedes from her view, she says a last wistful farewell to her friends.
