In Tokyo, a pair of thieves smash open a shrine and steal its contents. Little do they know that their actions have unleashed a curse that is soon to bring fear, panic and destruction to the city. A mysterious woman watches the scene from her palace of crystal. This is Yugi, whose role will become ever more important in future episodes. Cackling, she summons a band of demons that scatter across the metropolis, absorbing themselves into buildings, from apartments to temples.
The next day, in Okayama, the Masaki household is waking to a beautiful spring morning. Naturally, it's not long before strange goings-on begin to happen. Washu pops out of mid-air, busily testing her new inter-dimensional tunnel; a device that can link two points in space, even if they are far apart. Mihoshi and Kiyone are arresting a speeding spacecraft (before running out of fuel and crashing into the lake) However, none of this is anywhere near as surprising as Tenchi's announcement. He gathers everyone around to tell them that, as successor to the Masaki shrine, he is leaving to study in Tokyo to become a Shinto priest, and he is leaving the next day. As only he and his grandfather, Katsuhito, knew, it comes as a surprise to everyone. Despite everyone's protestations, he has made his mind up. The only one not there to see him off is Ryoko, who is hung over from drinking one sip too many of Washu's home-brewed sake.
The next day, Tenchi is unpacking at his new apartment in Tokyo. Before he has chance to settle in, Katsuhito takes him to meet Mr. Tsuchida, Tenchi's new sensei. On the crosswalk on the way there, Tenchi's eyes meet with those of a pretty young girl's, and there is an instant chemistry, but the moment passes. At the shrine, Mr. Tsuchida asks Katsuhito to perform a purification ceremony at a building site before he leaves, and he agrees, taking Tenchi along for the experience. When they try the ceremony at the building site the next day, watched from afar by Yugi, they unwittingly release a whole clutch of rampaging demons. Unable to control or exorcise them, Tenchi and his grandfather run away in a panic, chased by the monsters.
Meanwhile, back at Tenchi's house, Ryoko has found out about Tenchi's moving to Tokyo. After a quick destructive loss of temper, she commandeers Washu's inter-dimensional tunnel to go and visit Tenchi in Tokyo. She and the girls arrive on the scene just in time to save the boys from the rampaging monsters. The demons defeated, they promise to visit Tenchi regularly using the inter-dimensional tunnel.
The next day, Tenchi is starting at his new school. He takes his seat next to a pretty young girl, the same girl he passed on the crosswalk the day before. She introduces herself as Sakuya, and even calls him 'cute'. However, Yugi continues to watch from her palace of crystal...
