Late
one night, as Kiyone is piloting the Yagami through an asteroid field,
the recently-repaired engines shut down again. As the power fails all
over the ship, Kiyone suspects that they may have stumbled into an area
known as Sargasso, a legendary and supposedly inescapable spaceship
graveyard. To Kiyone and Mihoshi's disbelief, a huge cruise spaceship
materializes right in front of the Yagami.
Throughout
the rest of the ship, other strange goings-on are afoot; objects are
moving around on their own, and Katsuhito senses an unusual presence
aboard. As Sasami sleeps in her room, a ghostly young girl appears out
of the mirror. She wakes Sasami, introduces herself as Mirei and tells
her she came from the spaceship outside. Mirei invites Sasami to step
back through the mirror with her.
Outside her room,
Tenchi overhears Sasami talking to Mirei, and opens the door in time
to see Sasami vanish into the mirror, accompanied by a bright ghostly
shape. In a panic, he wakes the others to tell them what he saw.
Sasami
and Mirei reappear in a beautifully-furnished room aboard Mirei's ship.
As they enjoy tea and cakes together, Mirei asks Sasami why she is not
afraid of her. Sasami explains that she is accustomed to seeing Ryoko
walk through walls or vanish at will, so she doesn't find Mirei's ability
surprising. Mirei explains that she does not know how she can do such
things, and that she has been alone on her ship for many years. She
indicates a photograph of herself on the mantelpiece as the only clue
to her past. Sasami notices the beautiful dress that Mirei is wearing
in the photograph, and Mirei offers her the chance to try it on. With
a wave of her hand, Sasami's outfit changes to Mirei's gown. After Sasami
has finished trying on the dress, Mirei suggests that they go for a
tour of the ship, and the two girls leave via the mirror again. As they
leave the room, it fades into a state of ruin behind them.
Meanwhile, aboard
the Yagami, Washu is scanning the mysterious spaceship outside. To her
surprise, she finds that the ship is completely dead, with no sign of
any energy output. They decide to board the ship to investigate further,
and split into three groups to search for Sasami.
As Mirei takes Sasami
around the ship, Sasami spots Ayeka and Ryoko searching for them as
they pass another mirror. Ayeka is shocked to see Sasami apparently
inside the mirror, but she disappears before she and Ryoko can get a
closer look.
After returning
to Mirei's room, Sasami has the idea to go and scare everyone some more.
She and Mirei dress up as ghosts with sheets over their heads and pop
out of a mirror in the ship's ballroom. Mihoshi and Kiyone are unfortunate
enough to be on the receiving end of their prank, and the shock causes
Mihoshi to faint and Kiyone to freeze on the spot!
Their
practical joke a success, Mirei and Sasami return to Mirei's room again.
Mirei asks Sasami to close her eyes for a moment, and when she opens
them again, she and Mirei are now in the garden at the royal palace
on Jurai. It is merely an illusion created by Mirei from looking at
Sasami's happiest memories, but a convincing illusion nonetheless. They
play in the garden together, and explore the hedge maze. Next, they
visit an amusement park that Sasami remembers from Earth, and in the
evening they watch a firework display. However, as night draws in, Sasami
thinks that she should be getting back. The scene around her fades,
and she and Mirei reappear in the dining hall of the ship. Mirei wistfully
bids Sasami goodbye, but she is happy to have shared a fun day with
her new friend.
Sasami
steps back out of the mirror in her bedroom aboard the Yagami. Everyone
is shocked and relieved to see her when she strolls onto the bridge.
Suddenly, the power comes back on, and the engines fire up again. Sasami
watches as Mirei's ship recedes from view, wondering if she will ever
see Mirei again. However, Mirei will always remember Sasami, as the
image of her new friend has joined the solitary figure of Mirei in the
photograph on her mantelpiece.
