Tenchi Masaki is walking to school through the woods surrounding the family shrine. As he strolls, he reminisces about the days when things were much less peaceful around the Masaki household, and the day it all began...
Above planet Earth, an explosive battle is taking place between two alien spaceships. Firing volleys of lasers at each other, the two ships are badly damaged and plummet towards Earth.
In a forest in Okayama, ordinary schoolboy Tenchi Masaki spots what looks like two meteors streaking across the sky before crashing into the trees near where he was walking. He rushes to investigate and finds the meteors were in fact spaceships. Beside the first crashed ship, he finds a woman, unconscious and apparently drunk. He comes to her aid, giving her water from the lake, and she slowly regains consciousness. She introduces herself as Ryoko, and tells Tenchi that she was being pursued by a space pirate. As she begs him to protect her, the occupant of the second spaceship appears, wearing a powerful mechanoid armour suit. Ryoko's pursuer opens fire on them, and they flee, chased by the armour-suited assailant. They are cornered by the pursuer and Tenchi tries to reason with it, but to no avail; Ryoko maintains that her pursuer is a savage criminal, and promises to die together with Tenchi. Luckily, the attacker steps on a can and falls flat on its face, unable to get up under the weight of the armour. Ryoko and Tenchi make their escape, but not before Ryoko has kicked her pursuer off the edge of the cliff!
At the Masaki home, Tenchi's grandfather Katsuhito is getting worried about Tenchi's late arrival. Tenchi's father Nobuyuki suggests he might be out chatting up girls, but Katsuhito points out that Tenchi does not share the same attitude to women as his father. However, they are both surprised when Tenchi turns up moments later with the attractive Ryoko in tow! Ryoko explains her predicament to the family, and Nobuyuki tells her she is welcome to stay at the Masaki home.
That evening, Tenchi works hard to put up the typhoon shutters on the house to try and keep Ryoko's pursuer out. With their best defences against the attacker prepared, Tenchi, Ryoko and Nobuyuki retreat to the house, while Katsuhito returns to the shrine. Later that evening, the doorbell rings and Tenchi answers the door to find the armoured invader staring him in the face. The attacker chases Ryoko and Tenchi out of the house and towards the family shrine. Katsuhito comes out to investigate the commotion. Seeing the battle-suited assailant, he draws his sword and attacks. The mechanoid armour explodes, and when the smoke clears, its pilot is kneeling amongst the wreckage. This supposedly dangerous space pirate is Mihoshi, a female Galaxy Police officer. She explains she is trying to arrest the infamous criminal Ryoko, and has an official wanted notice as proof. Ryoko confesses that she is indeed a space pirate, and was hung over when she was attacked by Mihoshi. Mihoshi tries to open fire on Ryoko with her laser pistol, but the blasts simply bounce away without touching her. Ryoko counterattacks with glowing balls of energy summoned from her hands. She chases Tenchi and Mihoshi back to the Masaki home. When she catches up with them, Tenchi turns to face her and grabs a hoe as a weapon. Seeing his determination, Ryoko simply gives up, saying she was only joking and didn't really want to harm them.
Mihoshi tries to arrest Ryoko again, but cannot remember the correct procedure, and gets so confused she bursts into tears! Ryoko decides to stay with Tenchi for a while, mentioning that she thought Tenchi's bravery was quite remarkable.
The next morning, the family is eating breakfast with his two new house guests, Ryoko and Mihoshi. Nobuyuki is all too delighted to have two pretty young women staying in the house, but Tenchi is a little hesitant, not least because it is up to him to repair the damage they caused the previous day!
