Episode 7 / Special - The Night Before the Carnival
  Omatsuri zenjitsu no yoru!
  Omatsuri zenjitsu no yoru!
Release date - 25th January 1994

Life in the Masaki household after the Kagato incident begins to return to some sense of normality. Tenchi wakes one morning to find a bleary-eyed Ryoko staring through the wall at him. She has been watching him all night, and Tenchi is becoming annoyed at how overprotective she has become since his battle with Kagato. After finally getting a little privacy in the toilet, he accidentally activates his combat armour, and finds a seed in the pocket. The seed was given to him by Tsunami, and is meant to be used to re-grow Ayeka's life-tree, Ryu-Oh. He gives the seed to Ayeka, who accepts it with gratitude (much to Ryoko's annoyance).

Don't dig THAT up, Ryo-ohki!A little while later, Ayeka comes to Washu in her laboratory under the stairs in the Masaki home (actually, the door just leads to alternative dimension where her lab resides). She asks Washu for a suitable vessel in which to plant the new seed, and after agreeing to her demands to address her as "Little Washu", she is given a spare Juraian ship module in which to plant Ryu-Oh's seed. Meanwhile, the unfortunate Tenchi, who entered Washu's lab to call everyone for breakfast, finds himself the unwilling subject of a series of bizarre (and saucy) experiments to discover the origin of the Light Hawk Wings he generated in his battle with Kagato.

Naughty nurse Washu and her 'experiments'Later that morning, Ryoko comes across Mihoshi and Sasami reading romance comics. Tenchi's father has an extensive library of them, and it's not long before she and Ayeka are poring over them for ideas on how to win Tenchi's heart. Ryoko deliberately knocks him over so he can bashfully apologise and introduce herself, tries her hand at cooking (with inedible results), and even plans to grovel to his grandfather. Ayeka trips him up with a rope so she can give him her hanky, knits him a sweater that ends up twenty sizes too big, and waits for him after school (without success, it not being a school day).

After their repeated attempts fail, Ryoko and Ayeka finally decide to co-operate in removing the competition by locking Washu in her lab, and sending Mihoshi back to GPHQ to file a report on Kagato. Finally, Ryoko gets the drop on Ayeka by tying her with ropes before sneaking off to Tenchi's room. What she does not expect is a Juraian trap attached to his bedroom door which teleports anyone who tries to enter without knocking into the middle of the lake. A soaking wet Ryoko returns to the house just as Ayeka has managed to escape from her ropes. Rather than simply fighting each other, Ryoko and Ayeka have a frank discussion about the role of physical intimacy in a relationship. However, they quickly fall out over this, and end up fighting hand-to-hand anyway.

Sasami's nightmareMeanwhile, Sasami is having a nightmare. As she walks alone, the ground shatters beneath her and she falls, injuring herself. As Tenchi is trying to help her, he is seized by a mysterious woman. As Sasami awakes, the emblem on her forehead glowing, she mutters the name "Tokimi" - the lady in her dream. Upset by her dream, she leaves her room, passing the still-fighting Ayeka and Ryoko in the corridor, and heads for Tenchi's room. Two wet fools who forgot to knockWhen Ryoko and Ayeka hear not only Sasami is in there, but Washu and Ryo-ohki as well, they forget their fight and rush for the door, but forgetting to knock they both end up in the middle of the lake. As the pair, dripping wet and miserable, clamber out of the lake, a roar overhead attracts their attention; Mihoshi's ship is returning, and it's out of control! It crashes into the house, demolishing all except Washu's lab.

With the Masaki home wrecked, everyone has to sleep inside the Ryu-Oh unit. Ayeka wakes to see Ryo-ohki sitting near the place she planted the life-tree seed, and thinking Ryo-ohki is trying to dig it up again, she rushes to stop her. However, Ryo-ohki has only spotted that the tree has just sprouted into a tiny seedling.

<< Episode 6 - We Need Tenchi

Fact! When Ryoko deliberately bumps into Tenchi after getting the idea from reading a romance comic, there is a hidden frame at the moment of collision that can only be seen clearly by pausing the video, LD or DVD. The frame, shown on the right, depicts a leotard-clad Ryoko performing a flying kick on Tenchi!

Hidden Frame
Fact! In this episode, during Washu's infamous nurse scene (which was cut from the sanitised TV version), her computer is heard to sound a fanfare and utter "Ben Casey!" when she changes into her nurse's outfit. "Ben Casey" was a drama series set in a hospital that ran on the US television network ABC from 1961-66. A TV movie was also made in 1988.
