Episode 5 - Kagato Attacks!
  Kagatô shûrai!
  Kagatō shūrai!
Release date -  25th February 1993

Kagato arrivesOne snowy day, Ryoko is relaxing and drinking sake in the newly-built floating bathhouse. Ayeka enters, then quickly tries to leave after seeing Ryoko, but Ryoko spots her and badgers her into joining her for a drink. As they both become steadily tipsier, they discuss Tenchi. Ryoko fondly recalls the time she spent watching Tenchi grow up, herself nothing more than a ghost confined to her cave. Before long, Mihoshi joins them and, with a few drinks inside her, confesses that she too has feelings for Tenchi. However, a relatively peaceful bath time is about to be interrupted; the infamous criminal Kagato has arrived. He appears in the bathhouse and seizes Ryoko.

Tenchi and the girls quickly track him down to Yosho's life-tree. He appears and confronts them, claiming to be Ryoko's creator. He takes control of Ryoko and makes her attack Tenchi. Wrestling himself free of Ryoko's grasp, Tenchi attacks Kagato with his sword, but Kagato is no match for him, and Tenchi is soon beaten. Just as Kagato is about to seize Tenchi's sword, Tenchi's grandfather Katsuhito arrives on the scene, snatches it up and launches into battle with Kagato. Katsuhito is easily as skilled as Kagato, but with Ryoko acting under his influence and fighting alongside him, the battle is difficult. Katsuhito tricks Kagato by sticking the sword into the life-tree and allowing Kagato to take it. However, because Kagato is not a descendant of the Juraian royal family, he cannot touch it. Disadvantaged but not defeated, Kagato returns to his ship, taking Ryoko with him.

Yosho and Ayeka reunitedThe battle over, Ayeka finally makes the connection, realising that because Katsuhito could operate the sword, and because Kagato addressed him as the crown prince of Jurai, that he must be her missing half-brother Yosho. Katsuhito finally confesses that he is indeed her absent sibling, and he did not return to Jurai after defeating Ryoko 700 years ago because, being half-Earthling, he could not face the prejudice this brought him on his home planet. Tenchi is told that he must go and rescue Ryoko and prevent Kagato from unlocking the secret power of Jurai. Ryo-Ohki leads them to the lake shore, where she transforms into her spaceship form. The central pod from Ayeka's ship, Ryu-Oh, rises out of the lake and merges with Ryo-Ohki.

Defending Ryo-Ohki with the Light Hawk WingsTaking flight in the transformed Ryo-Ohki, Tenchi, Ayeka and Mihoshi set course for Kagato's battleship, the Soja. Kagato quickly detects their presence and attacks. His ship is very powerful, and Ryo-Ohki is only able to avoid the blasts. Tenchi decides to use Ayeka's ship to attack, using the Light Hawk Wings as a weapon (all first and second generation Jurai ships can generate them). However, as the Light Hawk Wings were designed primarily as a shield, their use as a weapon leaves the ship vulnerable. A well-timed shot from Kagato's ship manages to destroy the Ryu-Oh pod, and Tenchi is blasted out into space. With a scream of rage, Ryoko, who witnessed the conclusion of the battle, escapes from Kagato's imprisonment and searches the surrounding space for Tenchi. All she can find it his bloodstained headband. With tears of grief in her eyes, she swears revenge on Kagato.
