The day of the induction
ceremony for new students arrives, and Seina has been chosen to give
a speech on behalf of the freshmen. He steps up to the stage and takes
the microphone, but the PA system suddenly cuts out. He taps the microphone
and tries shouting into it. At that moment, the PA system switches back
on at maximum volume and Seina's yelling blows out the speakers, causing
an explosion that lays waste to entire auditorium!
The
new recruits' training program begins, and with the Academy computer
systems out of order for the duration, most of the regular classes have
been cancelled. Instructor Seiryo Tennan's PE class is one of the few
still still running. Seiryo, whose hatred of Earthlings has been made
all the worse by the injuries he acquired in the induction ceremony
explosion, is intent on making Seina's life a misery, and starts by
blaming the Academy computer failure on him. As the other students start
their physical training regime, Seina finds himself hopelessly outpaced,
but still Seiryo insists Seina complete every lap, every sit-up, every
push-up, under his watchful eye. The lesson bell goes, but Seina still
has more to do and Seiryo keeps him behind to complete the workout.
Some time later,
Amane and Kiriko wander past and spot Seina still struggling through
his workout. Amane remarks that Seiryo is being unfair because Seina
hasn't been through the physical enhancement procedure yet, nor will
he be able to until the computers are fixed. She finds Seina's struggle
amusing, but Kiriko soon scolds her for laughing at him.
That evening, Seina
returns exhausted to his dorm. Rajau tries to reassure him by telling
him that self-discipline and mental ability is more important than physical
strength, but Seina is, for the first time, considering going back home.
The
next day, Amane and Kiriko discuss the computer problem over lunch.
Kiriko is suspicious; no previous maintenance work has taken this long.
Seiryo interrupts them by taking the seat next to them (though Amane
shows her displeasure by sticking her fork in his head). Seiryo brings
up the subject of Seina's progress, boasting that if anyone can bring
out his potential, it is himself. Kiriko admits that if Seina cannot
keep up, he will be forced to drop out of the Academy, but Amane points
out that Seiryo is supposed to be in charge of the body enhancement
programme. Seiryo reminds them that until the computers are fixed, there
is nothing he can do, then leaves before they can question him further.
Later, Kiriko and
Amane take it upon themselves to investigate the repairs to the Academy
computers. The technician assures them that most of the systems will
be working soon, but the body enhancement system may take longer. After
they leave, Seiryo steps out of his hiding place; it seems he has been
keeping the systems off-line so he can break poor Seina's will. However,
Principal Mikami is also hiding in the computer room and overhears his
fiendish plan. As punishment, she sends him to clean toilets with Mitoto!
With Seiryo otherwise
occupied with a scrubbing brush, there is nobody to run the body enhancement
programme, so Airi Masaki calls Kiriko and Amane before her to suggest
one of them take over to help Seina through his enhancement.
Meanwhile, Elma
lectures Seina on the nature of the body enhancement process. Thousands
of nano-machines will be implanted in his body, boosting his strength,
speed, stamina and reflexes, as well as improving healing and increasing
his life-span. She assures him that this procedure is normal for Galaxy
Police officers, but Seina is somewhat nervous about changing his body
by artificial means. He asks Elma if there is any chance it could go
wrong, but she assures him that failures in the procedure are virtually
unheard of, and promises to look after him if he comes to any harm!
After
the lecture, Seina meets Kiriko and she takes him out to a secluded
spot overlooking the sea, where they reminisce about the times they
spent together at the ocean on Earth. She tells Seina that if he goes
ahead with the body enhancement procedure, he will be forbidden to return
home. She tells him that the Galaxy Police body enhancements are designed
for combat, and even if the procedure is reversed at a later date, traces
of the enhancement will still remain. Therefore he cannot marry an ordinary
Earth woman, or even visit a doctor or hospital on Earth. Kiriko is
worried that without access to human medical expertise, even a minor
injury could prove fatal. She urges him to reconsider and go back home,
but Seina stands by his convictions and tells her he intends to become
a Galaxy Police officer no matter what. After all, he points out, his
bad luck is no different on Earth, so he would rather take his chances
in space. Just then, Amane calls them on Kiriko's wrist communicator,
asking Seina to come to the body enhancement control room.
When Seina arrives,
he finds that Amane has been reassigned as the body enhancement supervisor.
Seina asks her why she has been assigned to the Academy (the last time
he met her she was a GP officer). Amane takes the chance to vent her
bile over how, as a result of her thinking he was related to Tenchi
Masaki and giving him the GP application form in the first place (see
episode 1), she was reassigned as an instructor
and missed her opportunity to be promoted to first-class detective.
Her outburst over, she turns back to the matter in hand and orders Seina
to take his clothes off. Kiriko is outraged, so she offers Elma the
task of undressing him instead!
With
Seina stripped and placed in a large glass chamber, the body enhancement
procedure begins. The chamber fills with liquid, and Seina is placed
into a trance. Soon, the nano-machines are injected into his body. When
he awakes, he lying on the floor of a large chamber, wearing a skin-tight
body suit, with Amane standing at his side. She asks him to stand up,
and when he does so he flies into the air and rebounds off the ceiling.
He finds that any small movement jolts him violently across the room.
Amane presses a button on her cuff, and at once Seina can move normally.
She explains that the body suit he wears is designed to restrict his
movements so he can gradually grow accustomed to his vastly increased
strength. The most difficult period of the body enhancement procedure
lies ahead...
Meanwhile, Seiryo
and Mitoto continue their cleaning duties. Having scrubbed every toilet
in the Academy, they have somehow found their way onto a pirate spaceship
and are cleaning it from top to bottom!
