Mihoshi is an officer in the Galaxy Police (an interstellar law-enforcement agency that has close links with the planet of Jurai). Although she is often thought of as incompetent, she tries her hardest and often wins through with bravery and no small measure of luck.

In the OVA series, her rash and easily-distracted manner is often kept in check by Yukinojo, her shipboard computer. This role is filled by her partner Kiyone in the TV series.

In the OVA series continuity, Mihoshi's grandfather is Minami Kuramitsu, marshal of the Galaxy Police, and her grandmother Mikami is the principal of the Galaxy Police Academy. Mihoshi's mother Mitoto also works at the Galaxy Police as a cleaner, and she appears in the spin-off TV series Tenchi Muyo! GXP. Her brother Misao is also a Galaxy Policeman and spaceship captain. In the third OVA series it is revealed there was some traumatic event in her past, almost resulting in her death, but this has not yet been explored in any detail.

Rumour has it that Mihoshi will lose her memory if the ribbon in her hair is removed.
