Muyo!
OVA Series Characters
 |
Did
you know that many of the names in the Tenchi series are based on
locations in Okayama prefecture, Japan? Visitors to Okayama can stroll
around Kiyone Town or take in the sights of picturesque Mount Washu!
You can find out more about the place names that have inspired the
Tenchi Muyo characters at this
site (page opens in new window) - please note that most of
the page is in Japanese, but there are plenty of photographs to look
at. |

Yosho
alternative spelling: Yousho
遥照
Yosho, introduced to us in the third OVA episode, is
Ayeka's half brother (sharing the same father). It is arranged for
him to marry Ayeka (as it is normal to marry within the family on
Jurai), but he leaves Jurai to fight Ryoko and is never seen again.
However, Ayeka later finds out he has been alive and well on Earth
for 700 years, but has changed almost beyond recognition. |

As Sasami's ship, Tsunami is the most powerful Jurai
ship in the galaxy. Tsunami's humanoid form closely resembles what
Sasami would look like as an adult, and it is revealed in the second
OVA series that Sasami and Tsunami's spirits are very closely intertwined.
Tsunami is one of the three chôshin (almighty beings),
along with Washu and Lady Tokimi. |

Funaho
alternative spelling: Hunaho
船穂
Funaho, who is Yosho's mother, arrives unexpectedly on Earth in OVA
episode 13. She is a typically quiet and dignified Juraian queen.
Although her visit to Earth is to see her son Yosho, she also brings
an interesting proposition for Washu, and the suggestion that Tenchi
might be suitable for royal duties on planet Jurai. Funaho was born
on Earth, but is descended from the first Juraian emperor's sister. |

Misaki

Also appearing in the OVA episode 13, Misaki is Sasami and Ayeka's
mother and a Juraian queen. She is an exuberant character, ready to
give bone-crushing hugs to just about everyone, and she will not tolerate
any unkindness towards her precious daughters. Although she can be
a real handful, she is kind-hearted and adores everything and everyone. In the third OVA series, we discover there is another side to her, a fiercely powerful and vicious being capable of overpowering even the chôshin, but which is normally sealed away; the so-called "counteractor". |

only a brief appearance in the last episode of the second OVA series.
He is a strict father, and no sooner has he arrived on Earth than
he orders Ayeka and Sasami to return home, telling Ayeka that he
has
already chosen a husband for her. When Tenchi beats Ayeka's suitor
in a duel, he does finally concede defeat, but he is already planning
a return to Earth before getting home again. |

chosen by royal matchmaker Seto Kamiki (who is also her adoptive
mother)
as Tenchi's future bride! Needless to say, her arrival is the cause
of much anguish among Ryoko and Ayeka. Noike is the adopted daughter
of Seto, a former Galaxy Police
officer who was partnered with Mihoshi for a while, and now lives
with Tenchi's extended family. She soon sets herself up as unofficial
head of the family, and regularly helps out around the house. She
was abandoned as a child and raised in an orphanage until Seto adopted
her, and spent time in the Galaxy Army before joining the Galaxy
Police. |

(albeit with different character designs). Kagato commands a huge
space battleship, the Soja. In the OVA series, he arrives on Earth
in response to Ryoko's awakening, and seizes control of her so as
to use her gems to take Tsunami, the ultimate power in the universe. He was created by Washu from a clone of Naja Akara, a close friend of hers who is missing presumed dead, but she merged with an early male Mass prototype body, cast off her female half and turned to evil. However, Kagato's female half lived on, and is revealed in the closing episodes of the third OVA series. |

second OVA series. Under the orders of Lady Tokimi, he heads for Earth
to kidnap Ryoko, replacing her with an evil duplicate under his control.
The duplicate, Zero, is charged with the mission of capturing Washu,
at the behest of Lady Tokimi. Dr. Clay attended the Royal Science
Academy with Washu, and even competed against her for the director's
chair until he was drummed out of the academy. Dr. Clay's spaceship
is immense, and resembles a woman with a dress billowing behind her. |

Zero 零
Zero is Dr. Clay's robotic servant, capable of shape-shifting to suit
its missions. In the second OVA series, Zero is made to imitate Ryoko
exactly in order to capture Washu, and to eliminate anyone that stands
in her way. However, the copy is so perfect that she experiences the
same feelings for Tenchi that Ryoko has, and she simply clams up and
blushes bright red whenever Tenchi so much as speaks to her! Zero
eventually turns against her master, Dr. Clay, when he threatens to
harm Tenchi. |

The captain of the section

numerous non-humanoid employees of the Galaxy Police (he is a Wau,
one of several of his species that appear in the various Tenchi series).
His job is a tough one with the clumsiest detective in the galaxy
under his command, and his desk is usually found piled high with damage
claims and misconduct reports resulting from her actions! |

In the later OVA episodes, we see he is becoming increasingly
unpredictable, and when word
reaches him that Mihoshi is unhappy on Earth, he sends his grandson
Misao out to fetch her, not caring if anyone else is harmed
in doing so. Minami's sister Mikami is the principal of the Galaxy
Police training
academy.

duty of looking after Taro for a couple of days, and they run themselves
ragged caring for him. Where the others cannot cope, Washu comes
into her own, looking after him better than any of them, and she
eventually

The innkeeper of the hot springs that Tenchi and his friends manage
to destroy in OVA episode 4 (and rebuild again in episode 9) is actually

her guests, particularly ones responsible for so much damage... |

Amagasaki 尼ヶ崎 和彦
Despite only appearing in the first episode of the Tenchi Muyo OVA
series, and then only for a few seconds, Tenchi's big-nosed school
friend Amagasaki has gained quite a following, thanks in part to a
comic strip "Tenchi Muyo: Amagasaki" that appeared in the Gakken Tenchi
Muyo books and Japanese Laserdiscs (featuring a jealous Amagasaki
trying to gain the same success with women that Tenchi has managed).
Apparently, this jealousy has since inspired him to move schools to
Toyko. Amagasaki becomes a regular cast member and a good friend of Tenchi in the Tenchi
in Tokyo continuity. |
